How to Clean & Care for Compression Stockings: Complete Guide

Why Proper Care Matters

Medical compression stockings are precision-engineered garments with graduated compression — they're tighter at the ankle and gradually decrease in pressure towards the top. If you're using them to manage varicose veins, proper care is especially important to maintain their therapeutic compression. Improper washing or drying can damage the elastic fibres, reducing their effectiveness and lifespan.

With proper care, your compression stockings can last 4-6 months instead of the typical 3 months.

Step-by-Step Washing Guide

Hand Washing (Recommended)

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water (30°C / 86°F maximum)
  2. Add a small amount of mild soap or gentle detergent — avoid bleach, fabric softener, or harsh chemicals
  3. Submerge the stockings and gently squeeze them through the soapy water
  4. Do not wring, twist, or scrub — this can damage the elastic fibres
  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean lukewarm water until all soap is removed
  6. Gently squeeze out excess water — do not wring

Machine Washing (If Necessary)

If you must use a washing machine:

  • Use a mesh laundry bag to protect the stockings
  • Select the delicate/gentle cycle with cold or lukewarm water
  • Use mild detergent only — no bleach or fabric softener
  • Do not spin dry at high speed

How to Dry Compression Stockings

Proper drying is just as important as proper washing:

  1. Lay flat on a clean towel — gently roll the towel to absorb excess water
  2. Air dry on a flat surface or hang on a drying rack away from direct sunlight
  3. Never use a tumble dryer — the heat destroys elastic fibres
  4. Never hang on a clothesline by the top band — this stretches the material
  5. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources — UV rays and heat damage the fabric
  6. Do not iron compression stockings
Pro Tip: Have at least 2 pairs of compression stockings so you can alternate daily. This gives each pair time to rest and recover its elasticity.

Daily Care Tips

Putting On

  • Apply stockings in the morning when swelling is minimal
  • Use rubber gloves for better grip
  • Turn the stocking inside out to the heel, place your foot in, then roll up
  • Smooth out any wrinkles — bunching can cause pressure points

During the Day

  • Avoid folding or rolling down the top band
  • Keep toenails trimmed to prevent snags
  • Apply lotion to legs at night (not before wearing stockings — lotion can degrade the fabric)

Taking Off

  • Peel down gradually from the top — don't pull from the toe
  • Wash after every use for hygiene and to restore elasticity

When to Replace Your Compression Stockings

Replace your stockings when you notice:

  • Loss of compression — they feel loose or easy to put on
  • Visible wear — thinning fabric, holes, or runs
  • Sagging — they no longer stay up properly
  • Loss of shape — the heel or toe area is stretched out
  • Discolouration — significant fading or colour change

As a general guideline, replace medical compression stockings every 3-6 months with daily use.
